What to Wear for Your Session
What you wear plays an important role in how polished, confident, and timeless your final images feel. The goal is always to keep the focus on you, while choosing clothing that photographs well and complements your skin tone and the lighting used during your session.
For individual portraits and headshots, solid colors and simple styles tend to produce the most consistent, professional results. Well-fitted clothing with clean lines helps create images that feel natural, modern, and enduring.
If you’re ever unsure, guidance is provided before and during your session to help you feel comfortable and confident in your choices.
Recommended Colors (Why Jewel Tones Work Best)
Jewel tones are rich, deep colors inspired by gemstones. They photograph beautifully under studio lighting, flatter a wide range of skin tones, and help keep attention on your face rather than your clothing.
Recommended colors include:
Navy or deep blue
Emerald or forest green
Burgundy or wine
Teal
Plum
Charcoal gray
It’s best to avoid neon colors, busy patterns, heavy logos, or very bright whites, as these can distract from your expression and features.
Clothing Guidance for Men
For men, solid shirts, sport coats, or suits in darker or jewel tones photograph exceptionally well. Ties are optional but can add polish when kept simple, using solid colors or subtle patterns. Well-fitted clothing always photographs better than loose or oversized garments.
Clothing Guidance for Women
For women, blouses, dresses, or tops in jewel tones create flattering, elegant portraits. Simple necklines and light layering—such as a blazer or structured jacket—add versatility without distraction. Matte fabrics tend to photograph better than shiny or reflective materials.
Family, Coordinated, and Themed Portrait Sessions
These recommendations are best suited for individual portraits and headshots. For family sessions, coordinated outfits, cultural attire, or themed sessions, different wardrobe choices may be intentional and encouraged.
In those cases, color coordination, matching outfits, or dress codes can enhance the overall look and meaning of the session. Guidance is tailored specifically to your session to ensure everything photographs beautifully and feels authentic to you.
Final Tip
If you’re deciding between outfits, feel free to bring more than one or send photos ahead of time for feedback. The final choice is always yours, and we can quickly evaluate what works best once you’re in front of the camera and lighting.
All sessions are fully guided—from posing to expression to wardrobe support—so you never have to figure it out on your own.
